Introduction
Higashiyuenchi is an urban park in Kano-cho, Chuo-ku, Kobe, between Sannomiya and the former foreign settlement, laid out in the Meiji era beside the foreign residents' quarter. After the 1995 Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake it became a centre of mourning: the 1.17 Light of Hope burns flames brought from disaster areas, and a stopped clock marks the moment the quake struck. Renewed around a lawn plaza, it now hosts Night Picnic evenings, jazz concerts and the Kobe Luminarie.
