Introduction

Yabiji is the largest coral reef complex in Japan, a cluster of more than a hundred reefs lying 5 to 22 km north of Ikema Island in Miyako, Okinawa, designated a Natural Monument and Place of Scenic Beauty in March 2013. It stretches about 17 km north to south and 6.5 km east to west, built on eight large dry reefs surrounded by table reefs, and many of the smaller reefs are named after parts of the body — head, torso, stomach — or after animals such as the parrotfish. Usually submerged, the reef flats surface at the spring low tides around the third day of the third lunar month, earning the name 'phantom continent'. The British ship Providence was wrecked here in 1797.
