Introduction
The Kitano Foreigners' Club on Kitano-cho's ijinkan street in Chuo, Kobe, is a social mansion intact in Meiji style, also known as the 'Rofu-ro'. It recreates the foreign residents' members' club of the open-port years: a Bourbon-style carved wooden hearth, a grand ground-floor bar, an antique organ and gramophone, Renaissance scores, a 19th-century carriage and old kitchen, with a rare cross-hole well in the garden; dress-up photo sessions run on weekends by reservation.
