Introduction

Yoshino Jingu in Yoshino, Nara, was founded by Emperor Meiji in 1889 to enshrine Emperor Go-Daigo and was renamed from Yoshino-miya in 1918. The present cypress hall, rebuilt in 1932, faces north in deference to the emperor's wish to return to Kyoto. One of the Fifteen Shrines of the Kenmu Restoration, the precinct also holds three shrines to seven loyal Southern Court ministers, and its cherry-lined approach forms part of the Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range World Heritage site.
