Introduction

Kobe Kitano Museum is a white-painted Western house completed in 1898 as the residence of the American consul; it continued to serve as the consulate until 1978. In 1996, the year after the Great Hanshin earthquake, it was restored and opened as a museum, making it one of the few places in the Kitano Ijinkan district where the building and the display carry equal weight. The permanent rotation shows work by Hyogo-born illustrator Moe Nagata, changing monthly, alongside the 'Painters of Montmartre' exchange exhibition, materials on the history of Kitano and Kobe and records of the early national olive grove. The museum also houses the Kitano-Yamamoto district preservation association and the Kobe International Olive Academy. Recent special exhibitions have ranged from manga original art to themed shows, with their own prices and closing days. KITANO cafe CREDO on the ground floor is a natural pause after the uphill streets.
