Introduction

Kanteibyo on Nakayamate-dori in Chuo, Kobe, is among Japan's oldest temples to Guan Yu, run by the Kobe Chinese Association. Its forerunner, the Obaku-affiliated Churakuji, was moved here by Chinese merchants in 1892 and rebuilt after the 1945 air raids; the gate plaque 'Kanteibyo' was brushed by calligrapher Yu You-ren. Guan Yu is worshipped with Guanyin and Mazu, and festivals follow the lunar calendar.
