Introduction

The Irie Taikichi Memorial Museum is a rare photography-dedicated museum in Kansai, honouring Nara-born photographer Taikichi Irie (1905-1992), who spent his life photographing Yamato landscapes and Buddhist statues; it holds some 80,000 of his works and stages shows by his contemporaries and newer artists. Kisho Kurokawa designed the building: a tiled roof, glass walls and most of its volume sunk underground so it blends gently with the ancient capital — the architecture is itself an exhibit. Galleries follow Nara's temples, icons and seasonal light, with newer projects in metaverse and NFT media, making it a quiet refuge on a rainy day or away from the crowds of Nara Park.
