Introduction

In Yanbaru at Okinawa's far northern tip near Cape Hedo, Daisekirinzan reopened as ASMUI in late 2024. Its exposed limestone is the island's oldest rock, eroded over millions of years into pale karst pinnacles, stone fields and natural arches, woven with banyan and cycad subtropical forest. In Ryukyuan creation myth the goddess Amamikiyo first descended at the adjacent sacred site Ashimui, and over forty prayer spots remain, including the 'good-fortune stone' visitors touch for luck. It joined Yanbaru National Park in 2016 and the World Natural Heritage listing in 2021.
