Introduction
This former school has had two public lives. Kitano Elementary opened in 1908; its surviving east building, a reinforced-concrete structure from 1931, came through the Great Hanshin earthquake intact. The school closed in 1996 and in 1998 reopened as Kitano Kobo no Machi, with classrooms turned into some twenty workshops for leather, perfume, pork buns, Venetian glass and food models, at one point offering more than sixty hands-on activities. That programme ended in 2023 when the operator's contract expired and the facility closed. On 8 November 2024 the same building opened again as Kobe Kitano Nosta, with the theme shifted from making to eating under the concept ONE TABLE. The first floor holds NOSTA CAFE, a chocolate shop by Hiroaki Tsujiguchi, a bakery and a Nada sake store; the whole second floor is a sixty-seat Kitano Grill & Bar working with Kobe beef and produce from the five provinces of Hyogo; the third floor is event space. Most classroom partitions were removed, yet the 1931 chandeliers, stained glass and warm corridors still read unmistakably as a school. Entry is free and each shop charges separately; it is eight minutes from Kenchomae and pairs easily with the Kitano ijinkan district, Sorakuen and Ikuta Shrine. Older guides promising bookable craft workshops and twenty studios are out of date: people come now for a meal, a box of chocolate, and a look at how a nearly century-old school was given a third use.
