Introduction

Naramachi Koshi-no-Ie is a townhouse museum run by Nara City, set in the old Naramachi streets of Gangoji-cho. One point is often got wrong: it is not a preserved Edo building but a faithful modern reconstruction of a merchant house from the Edo to Meiji periods, built so that visitors can walk inside rather than only look at a row of lattice fronts from the street. Naramachi machiya are narrow at the front and very deep because the old tax was assessed on street frontage, and this two-storey timber house of about 257 square metres makes that logic visible. Past the latticed entrance is the doma, an earthen-floor passage that doubled as a workspace; beyond it lie tatami rooms and a hako-kaidan, a box staircase built into storage drawers to save space. A small inner courtyard and the skylight above it bring light and air into the windowless middle of the house, with a loft and storehouse at the rear. Entry is free, shoes come off on the tatami, and twenty to thirty minutes is enough; staff often point out the stair drawers and light openings that visitors miss. English labelling is limited, but the building explains itself better than text does. Open 09:00-17:00 with last entry 16:30, closed Mondays (Tuesday instead after a holiday) and 26 December to 5 January. There is no car park: walk twenty minutes from Kintetsu-Nara or take the loop bus to Tanaka-cho. Slotted between Gango-ji, Koshindo and a Naramachi cafe, it is a particularly good rainy-day stop.
