Introduction

The Naramachi Karakuri Toy Museum occupies a Meiji-era (c. 1890) townhouse, the former Matsuya residence, in Nara's Naramachi quarter — a free, hands-on facility where traditional mechanical toys can actually be touched and played with. About thirty restored Edo-era toys, all wound, pulled and spun by gravity, friction and pine resin, fill the tatami rooms; the collection of some 600 pieces rotates every two months by season. The city-designated streetscape building gained a workshop wing in 2012, hosting monthly advance-booking toy-making classes.
