Introduction
Suma Rikyu Park occupies the grounds of the former Muko Imperial Villa, a Meiji-era imperial residence handed to Kobe City after the war and opened as a public park in 1967. Its core is a formal Western garden laid out on a symmetrical axis across the Suma terrace: tiered beds, fountains and clipped hedges climbing toward the ridge, flanked by a rose garden and seasonal plantings. Roses peak in May and autumn colour in November; evening openings run in summer and during the leaf season. From the upper terraces the Suma coast and Osaka Bay come into view, setting imperial geometry against open sea, which is what makes the park distinctive. Paths are sloped, so allow at least an hour and a half for a full circuit.
