Introduction
Fukuchiin stands in Fukuchiin-cho, Nara, at the southern edge of Nara Park, and is a Shingon Ritsu-school temple with the mountain name Seireisan. Its site is said to be the old location of Nara Shimizudera, built by the priest Genbo in the Nara period, and it was revived in the Kamakura period by Eison of Saidai-ji. The temple is known for Jizo devotion; its main image of Jizo Bosatsu is tall and weighty, and many stone Jizo figures stand in the grounds. The main hall is an Important Cultural Property, and in spring and autumn special openings allow worship of hidden images — a quiet old temple south of Naramachi.
