Introduction
Obitokede-ra stands in Imaichi-cho, Nara, and is a Shingon Ritsu-school temple known for safe-childbirth and child-blessing prayers, said to be Japan's oldest place of prayer for safe delivery. Legend tells that in the early Heian period the empress Fujiwara no Akiko, consort of Emperor Montoku, prayed here and was granted a child, giving the temple its name 'Obitoke', meaning to untie the birth sash and deliver safely. The temple honours Jizo Bosatsu, and its halls and stone images tied to safe-birth devotion give it a calm, solemn air; both the imperial family and ordinary worshippers have long come to pray.
