Introduction

Enjo-ji is a Shingon temple of the Omuro school on Mount Ninnikusen along the Yagyu road in Nara. Legend attributes its founding to a vow by Emperor Shomu and Empress Koken with the Chinese monk Koro in the 8th century, while historians generally credit the monk Myozen in the mid-Heian period (1026). Its National Treasures include the seated Dainichi Nyorai carved by Unkei in his twenties—the earliest work bearing his signature—and the Kasuga-do and Hakusan-do halls moved here from Kasuga Taisha in 1228, the oldest Kasuga-style shrine buildings extant. The Jodo-style garden before the gate, made in the late Heian period, is a nationally designated Place of Scenic Beauty, at its best with maples in autumn; the main hall, rebuilt in the Muromachi period, enshrines a Heian-period seated Amida Nyorai.
