Introduction
Goryo Shrine stands in the heart of Naramachi, in Goryo-cho, Nara, and is said to have been founded in the early Heian period by order of Emperor Kanmu, enshrining the wrongly accused Princess Inoue and other goryo spirits to appease vengeful ghosts and ward off evil. Set among the old streets of the ancient capital, its grounds hold weeping cherries and peonies, lovely in every season, in a calm atmosphere. It is one of the old shrines on a Naramachi walk and fits well with the surrounding machiya lanes.
