Introduction
Kairyuo-ji was founded in 731 at the wish of Empress Komyo by the priest Genbo, who prayed for the safety of envoys sailing to Tang China; standing at the northeast corner of the empress's palace it is also called Sumi-dera. The Saido hall houses the 4.01 m five-storey miniature pagoda — a National Treasure designated as a building in 1951, Japan's smallest — while the main hall keeps a Kamakura-era Eleven-headed Kannon by the Kei school.
