Introduction
Chikurinin stands on Mount Yoshino in Yoshino-cho, Yoshino District, Nara Prefecture, and is said to have been founded by Prince Shotoku, an old temple of the Yoshino area. Its garden, Gunpoen, is said to have been laid out by Sen no Rikyu and later reworked by Hosokawa Yusai, and is counted, with Jikoin and the Taimadera Nakanobo garden, among the 'Three Great Gardens of Yamato'. The garden borrows the Yoshino mountains as scenery and changes with the seasons, with spring cherry blossoms especially lovely. Chikurinin also serves as a temple lodging, open for worship and stays, on the Yoshino cherry-viewing and retreat route.
