Yagyu-han Jinya Historic Park

Introduction

This is the site of the jinya, or domain administrative residence, built in 1642 by Yagyu Munenori, swordsmanship instructor to the Tokugawa shoguns and first lord of the Yagyu domain in Yamato; the surrounding valley is regarded as the birthplace of the Yagyu Shingan-ryu school. The building burned down a century later and was never rebuilt. Be prepared for what is actually here: no reconstructed hall, no museum, no ticket office. A set of piled stones marks the footprint, with cherry trees and pines around it, making a small quiet park that takes ten minutes to circle. Its value lies in position and context. Traces of stone walls and the outer moat still convey the scale of the compound, and standing in this valley makes it easier to see how one family tied swordsmanship, domain government and a mountain village together. For physical objects, walk next door. The Yagyu Karo House, built in 1848 as the home of the domain's chief retainer Oyamada Shurei, is the only surviving samurai residence in Nara city and shows weapons and documents of the family (JPY 350). Hotokuji, the family's mortuary temple, has the Yagyu graves behind its main hall (JPY 200). Farther on, the Itto-seki boulder, said to have been split when Yagyu Sekishusai fought a tengu, draws visitors through its appearance in anime. The bus from central Nara takes over forty minutes, so these belong in a half day in the Yagyu valley; coming all this way for a ring of stones alone will disappoint.
