Introduction
Sarutahiko Shrine, known locally as Doso Jinja, stands at a street corner in Gokumachi, Nara. Said to have been first enshrined within the grounds of Gango-ji in the era of Emperor Heijo, it is among Nara's oldest shrines. Dedicated to Sarutahiko-no-Mikoto and Ichikishimahime-no-Mikoto, it is worshipped as a dosojin, wife deity and contest deity — a guardian of fortune, matchmaking and safe childbirth, with a great boulder venerated for contests.
