Introduction
Excavated in 1975, the Heijokyo Sakyosanjo garden is a Nara-period garden site centred on a pond, showing the actual excavated structure. One of the few surviving ancient Japanese gardens, it is a Special Historic Site and Special Place of Scenic Beauty. The pond, built with varied stones in an S-curve, is shaded by trees; the excavated pond is shown as found and Nara-period buildings are reconstructed — thought to be a detached palace or noble's residence of Heijokyu, of high academic and scenic value.
