Introduction

The São Paulo Metropolitan Cathedral (Catedral da Sé) is the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of São Paulo, standing on Praça da Sé at the city's historic zero point. Its foundation stone was laid in 1913 under the city's first archbishop, Duarte Leopoldo e Silva, to a neo-Gothic design by German architect Maximilian Emil Hehl; it was dedicated in 1954 for São Paulo's 400th anniversary, though the towers were only finished in 1967. The building runs 111 m long and 46 m wide, with 92 m towers and a 30 m dome inspired by Florence's cathedral, seating 8,000 and using over 800 tonnes of fine marble. Inside, the five-aisled basilica's capitals are carved with Brazilian motifs — coffee branches, pineapples and armadillos. The crypt below the main altar is an underground church in its own right, its marble reliefs telling the stories of Job and St Jerome; it holds the tombs of every archbishop plus the 16th-century cacique Tibiriçá, who welcomed the Jesuits, and regent Diogo Feijó, with the remains of the Jesuit airship pioneer Bartolomeu de Gusmão transferred here in 2004. The 1954 Balbiani & Rossi organ has 12,000 pipes, among the largest in Latin America, and the east tower's 61 Dutch bells form the continent's largest carillon. A full renovation ran from 2000 to 2002, and the cathedral anchors any old-town walking route.

Forty years in the making
Foundation stone 1913, dedicated for the city's 400th anniversary in 1954, towers completed only in 1967; designed by German architect Maximilian Emil Hehl.
3
Tropical capitals
Capitals and interior ornament bring Brazilian produce into the Gothic frame — coffee branches, pineapples and armadillos.
4
The crypt
The crypt below the altar has 30 funerary chambers and was inaugurated in 1919; it holds every archbishop, the cacique Tibiriçá who welcomed the Jesuits and regent Diogo Feijó, the airship pioneer Bartolomeu de Gusmão (reinterred 2004) and Cardinal Arns (2016).
5
Great organ and carillon
The 1954 Balbiani & Rossi organ's 12,000 pipes and five manuals make it one of South America's largest; the east tower's 61 Dutch bells, 35 of them played electronically, form the heaviest carillon in Central and South America.
6
Zero point and old town
Praça da Sé carries the city's Marco Zero marker, with Pátio do Colégio (the 1554 founding site), São Bento monastery and the Mercadão market on foot.

💡 Tips

• Come outside Mass times — mid-morning around 10 is quiet with the best light; weekends draw the biggest crowds.
• Do not skip the crypt: the bronze tombs of cacique Tibiriçá and regent Diogo Feijó rest below the main altar.
• Praça da Sé carries the city's Marco Zero marker, the point from which all São Paulo distances are measured.
• Link Pátio do Colégio (the 1554 founding site) on foot for an old-town half-day, with a mortadella sandwich stop at the Mercadão.
• After dark the cathedral is floodlit — shoot the neo-Gothic towers from the square rather than by day.
• The cathedral hosts organ recitals and the east-tower carillon rings on major feasts; check the official site for the schedule.
• A full restoration ran from 2000 to 2002 (about R$19.5 million); the cathedral reopened in 2002 with 14 turrets added, as foreseen in the original 1912 plans.
