Introduction

The Church of the Holy Spirit is the most important and conspicuous church in Heidelberg's old town. This towering Gothic church stands on the lively Market Square in the old-town center, and with its ancient history, majestic presence and excellent tower view over the old town, it is a key landmark of Heidelberg's old town. Built in the 14th–15th centuries, it is a grand late-Gothic sandstone church and the largest and most important in Heidelberg. It carries historical weight—once the court church and burial place of the Electors Palatine, and at one time held the famous, precious Bibliotheca Palatina. The church has weathered much; in a special period it was even divided by a wall for Catholic and Protestant use, witnessing the history of the Reformation. Its towering red sandstone tower is a striking landmark on the old-town skyline. Around the church, the Market Square (Marktplatz) is one of the old town's liveliest, most central squares—surrounded by the town hall and quaint old houses, with a fountain at its center, open-air seats of restaurants and cafés, and often a market, full of vivid life. Visitors can enter this ancient church and climb its bell tower for views of Heidelberg's red-roofed old town, the Market Square, the Neckar and the castle. Besides, some quaint, interesting little shops line the church's ground floor. Visiting the Church of the Holy Spirit at the old-town center, climbing the tower for the old-town view and feeling the Market Square's bustle is a place full of history and life in Heidelberg.
