Introduction

The Brühl Terrace is an elegant viewing terrace by the Elbe in Dresden's old town—a long promenade stretching high above the Elbe, renowned as the 'Balcony of Europe' for its sweeping views of Dresden's magnificent old-town architecture and the beautiful Elbe, a perfect spot to roam Dresden and enjoy its classic look. The Brühl Terrace sits on the south bank of the Elbe at the edge of Dresden's old town; originally part of the city's fortifications, it was later turned into a private garden and terrace by a count, and today is a public, elegant riverside viewing promenade high above the Elbe. It is called the 'Balcony of Europe' because from here you can fully enjoy the unparalleled beauty on both sides: toward the river, the wide Elbe, passing cruise ships and bridges, and the view of the new town across; toward the city, the series of world-famous magnificent buildings of Dresden's old town—the Frauenkirche, the Royal Palace, the Cathedral, the Academy of Fine Arts (its distinctive glass dome jokingly called the 'lemon squeezer') and other Baroque skyline, classical and grand. Strolling the Brühl Terrace, with the open Elbe water on one side and the old town's magnificent buildings on the other, is pleasant and charming, especially at dusk when the setting sun gilds the old town buildings and the lights come on.
