Introduction

Dresden Fortress designates the sixteenth-to-eighteenth-century fortifications - the Kasematten - preserved beneath the Brühl Terrace: vaulted brick passages with walls several metres thick, built to shelter soldiers and stores from bombardment. Parts are now opened on guided visits; you descend by stairway and walk through the inside of the city's ramparts in dim lamplight, surfacing again onto the terrace above the Elbe. A small fortress museum in the bastion shows defence models and weaponry.
