Introduction

Neustadt is a vibrant, artistic and alternative district on the north bank of the Elbe in Dresden, a sharp contrast to the magnificent classical old town across the river, a great place to feel Dresden's modern, lively, artistic side. Unlike the glorious, classical old town dominated by royal Baroque buildings, the Neustadt (especially the so-called 'Outer New Town') on the north bank of the Elbe exudes a very different urban vibe—largely spared from WWII's massive destruction, it retains many 19th-century buildings and has gradually become Dresden's most energetic, artistic, youthful and alternative district. Strolling Neustadt, visitors find streets lined with creative, individual shops—independent boutiques, designer stores, second-hand shops, bookstores, cafés, bars, restaurants, art galleries and cultural spaces, with colorful graffiti and street art on the walls, full of a free, diverse, inclusive and thriving artistic and youth culture. The famous 'Kunsthofpassage' (Art Courtyard) is especially unique—several connected courtyards whimsically decorated and transformed by artists, most famous being a blue 'water sound wall' fitted with many metal pipes that 'play music' in the rain, full of fanciful ideas, a signature spot in Neustadt. Besides, Neustadt is Dresden's nightlife center, with bars and restaurants lively after dark.
