Introduction

The Red Beach sits at Santorini's south tip near the Akrotiri site, among the island's most unique and famous beaches. What makes it special is its strange, intense color: Santorini is a volcanic island, and the Red Beach area bears the mark of volcanic activity—behind the beach rises a towering cliff and precipice of reddish (dark red, rust-red) volcanic rock, vivid and striking; the beach itself is covered with red (reddish-brown) sand and pebbles weathered from that red volcanic rock. This intense reddish-ochre, set against the clear blue Aegean water and the deep-blue sky ahead, forms an extremely strong and magnificent color contrast—a unique, striking red-and-blue picture, yet another wonder of Santorini's volcanic landscape and a popular sightseeing and photo spot. (Note: the red cliff behind is fairly steep and has occasionally seen rockfall historically—heed safety warnings and rockfall risk when visiting and staying; reaching the beach requires a short mountain path.)
