Introduction

Pyrgos sits on a high hill in south-central Santorini, roughly 300 metres up, the island's highest village and once its capital. The village spirals around the medieval Venetian kasteli (castle), with white houses and blue domes stepping up the slope along narrow lanes. From the top you can survey the whole island, both coasts and the vineyards. Several churches and wineries remain, and local white wines and tomato products are well regarded. Quieter than Fira or Oia, it is good for a calm walk and a wide sunset view.

🛈 Practical Info

→Suggested Time:About 1-2 hours including the climb and a village walk
→Best Time:Late afternoon, when the light softens and the hilltop sunset is best
→What to Bring:Wear grippy walking shoes, as the village is all steps and slopes
→Etiquette:Respect residents and avoid photographing inside private courtyards
→Transportation:Between Fira and Kamari; easiest by car or taxi, as buses are infrequent

💡 Tips

• From the entrance, follow the main lane uphill to the castle top; signs are sparse, so watch your step.
• Few tavernas and cafés are in the village, so in high season confirm opening or carry water.
• Quieter than Oia, it is a good alternative for a crowd-free sunset.
• Winery tastings usually need booking, so check times by phone or online beforehand.
