Introduction
Krafla is an active volcanic and geothermal area in northern Iceland, right beside Lake Myvatn. It has a caldera about 10 kilometers across, and eruptions in the 1970s and 1980s lasted for several years, leaving broad fields of lava. The best-known feature is the blue Viti crater lake, whose color comes from minerals, surrounded by steaming fumaroles and bubbling mud. The Krafla geothermal power station nearby uses underground heat to generate electricity. Visitors can follow trails to see the volcanic terrain up close and sense the power deep beneath the Icelandic earth.
