Introduction

Dimmuborgir lies east of Lake Myvatn in northern Iceland, a field of strange rock formations created when lava cooled. About 2,300 years ago a large lava flow pooled here into a lake, and as it cooled it formed pillars, arches and caves whose bizarre shapes resemble a dark castle, giving the area its name. Several trails of varying length wind among the rocks, letting visitors walk through this striking volcanic landscape. The site is also linked to Icelandic elf legends, and in winter the nearby crater and snow add to its mysterious air.
