Introduction
Lake Myvatn lies in northern Iceland and is an area on the Ring Road where volcanic landforms are highly concentrated, with the lake, surrounding lava fields, geothermal zones and craters forming a distinctive landscape. At the Hverir geothermal area by the lake you can see churning mud pools and sulphur vents, the air heavy with the smell of sulphur; Dimmuborgir is a strange group of black basalt columns resembling a dark castle; and rows of pseudo-craters are scattered around the lake. The wetlands are a birdwatching haven, with many waterbirds in summer. The nearby Myvatn Nature Baths are a well-known open-air soak, ideal for relaxing after sightseeing. Midges are numerous in summer, so protection is needed.
