Introduction

Manarola is the most photogenic and classic colorful fishing village of the Cinque Terre (Cinque Terre means five lands, five ancient fishing villages perched between sea cliffs on the Ligurian coast), the most ancient, photogenic and iconic of them all. It is the iconic image of the Cinque Terre: built on a steep, rugged sea cliff, its colorful traditional fishing houses (warm yellow, ochre red, pink-orange, bright yellow) cascade and cluster down the cliff face to a small dock and harbor in the deep-blue bay below, colorful houses, rugged dark cliffs, deep-blue Mediterranean and moored boats form a richly hued, layered, classic Mediterranean fishing-village picture, breathtaking and intoxicating (especially at dusk, when the warm sunset gilds the village and, after nightfall, the lit windows make it romantically stunning, a favorite of countless photographers). Within the village, narrow lanes and stone steps wind; outside on the cliff is a famous viewpoint. The hillsides around Manarola are covered with ancient vineyard terraces (famous for a sweet white wine). Visiting the Cinque Terre and admiring the classic, stunning Manarola is a superb spot on the Ligurian coast.
