Corniglia

Introduction

Corniglia is the only quiet fishing village of the Cinque Terre perched high atop a sea cliff. This secluded hilltop village, embraced by terraced vineyards and away from the noise, is tranquil, rustic and open in view, a serene spot on the Ligurian coast. Corniglia is the most unique and different of the five villages, the only one not directly on the sea (no harbor or beach), but high atop a cliff. Because of this lofty, sea-distanced position and its relatively inconvenient access (from the station you must climb a long flight of over 300 steps, the Lardarina, or take a shuttle bus), Corniglia is the least crowded, most tranquil, most rustic and most escape-from-the-noise village of the Cinque Terre. The village is quaint and peaceful: old, plain houses cluster and spread over the plateau atop the cliff, with narrow, quiet old stone alleys. From this cliff-top village the view is especially open and magnificent: from the viewpoint (such as the famous Santa Maria viewpoint) you look out over the vast, deep-blue Mediterranean panorama and the winding coastline (even other villages in the distance), blue sea meeting sky, boundless and beautiful. Around the village are layers of ancient terraced vineyards. Visiting the Cinque Terre's tranquil, rustic hilltop Corniglia is a serene spot on the Ligurian coast.
