Avermes Travel Guide

The City of Popes on the Rhone: grand Papal Palace, broken bridge and July theatre festival, gateway to Provence lavender.

📍 Destination Overview

Avignon sits on the banks of the Rhône River. In the 14th century, it was the seat of the Roman papacy; its magnificent Papal Palace and city walls are a UNESCO World Heritage site. The broken Saint-Bénezet Bridge is famous from a children's song, and the Place de l'Horloge with its outdoor cafes exudes Provençal leisure. Each July, the Avignon Festival transforms the entire city into a stage. Avignon is also the gateway to Provence's lavender fields — from mid-June to mid-July, the Valensole Plateau rolls with purple waves, while the Pont du Gard Roman aqueduct and surrounding villages complete the most enchanting summer journey in southern France.
