Grand Théâtre de Bordeaux
The Grand Théâtre de Bordeaux, designed by Victor Louis and completed in 1780, is the jewel of French Neoclassical theatre architecture. Twelve Corinthian columns front the portico, crowned by statues of the nine Muses, while inside the horseshoe-shaped auditorium is supported by timber saddle arches with no central pillars — so every seat enjoys clear sightlines and superb acoustics. The staircase and foyer, with their marble and gilded stucco, inspired Charles Garnier's Paris Opera. The city's ballet and opera companies still perform here, and it faces the elegant Place de la Comédie.

Standing on Rue Saint-James in Bordeaux's Saint-Pierre quarter, the Grosse Cloche is one of the oldest belfries in France and a survivor of the city's medieval ramparts. Twin round towers frame a bell chamber housing Armande-Louise, a bell cast in 1775 that weighs some 7,750 kilograms. Once a gateway on the pilgrims' road to Santiago de Compostela, it also served as a prison for young lawbreakers. A gilded lion weathervane crowns the roof, echoing the English connection of Bordeaux's past. The bell still tolls on national holidays and the first Sunday of each month.
