Introduction
Bordeaux Cathedral (Cathédrale Saint-André de Bordeaux) is the cathedral of Bordeaux in southwestern France, begun in the mid-12th century and expanded through the 14th to 16th centuries, an important example of French Gothic religious architecture. The church is famous as the site of the 1152 wedding of Henry II of England and Eleanor of Aquitaine, a turning point in European political history, and was the church where the philosopher Michel de Montaigne served as a canon from 1581. The nave rises about 23 meters, and the freestanding Tour Pey-Berland bell tower reaches 81 meters with panoramic city views. Inscribed in 1998 as part of the French routes of Santiago de Compostela, it is the religious and historical heart of Bordeaux's old city.
