Introduction

Some forty minutes southeast of Bordeaux near the village of Mazères, Roquetaillade - the name means carved rock - sets two castles on one limestone shelf: a 12th-century old fort reduced to broken walls, and beside it the new castle raised in the early 1300s by the family of Bordeaux archbishop Bertrand de Got, the future Pope Clement V. Viollet-le-Duc's 19th-century restoration added the signature spires and ornament, and the Maupeou family still lives there amid original furnishings. Visits are guided only, and its filmography gives it a second life among cinephiles.
