Introduction
The Grand Theatre de Bordeaux, built by architect Victor Louis between 1773 and 1780, is a masterpiece of French neoclassicism. Twelve Corinthian columns carry a majestic portico crowned with nine statues of muses and goddesses, and the theatre famously served as a model for the Paris Opera. Inside, the wooden auditorium is a marvel: supported by no central pillar at all, its saddle-shaped timber vault delivers superb acoustics, and opera and ballet are still performed here today. A living fossil of 18th-century theatre design, it remains the cultural heart of Bordeaux.
