Museum of Prehistory
The Museum of Prehistory in Echternach sits in the old town centre, condensing the archaeology of Luxembourg from the Stone Age onward. Flint tools, pottery, Roman coins and Merovingian jewellery unfold layer by layer, telling thousands of years of early life in the region with real clarity. Echternach itself is the country's oldest town, so following the museum with the abbey basilica and the old lanes completes the historical arc. Beaufort Castle
Beaufort Castle hides in the Muellerthal countryside near Echternach, where medieval ruins and a Renaissance chateau share one estate. The round towers and walls of the older castle can be climbed freely for wide views, while the Renaissance residence opens on guided tours, its halls and courtyard beautifully preserved. During the summer castle festival, the grounds fill with knight shows and a medieval-style market. Basilica of Saint Willibrord
The Basilica of Saint Willibrord rises over Echternach, Luxembourg's oldest town, at the heart of its Benedictine abbey. In 698 the Anglo-Saxon missionary Willibrord founded the monastery here and still rests in the crypt, his white stone sarcophagus drawing pilgrims ever since. Rebuilt after Second World War damage, the present basilica is a serene, light-filled space. Every Whit Tuesday the town's famous hopping procession dances around the church, a UNESCO-listed intangible heritage spectacle unique in Europe.

Set in the vaulted cellars of Echternach's abbey, this museum tells the thousand-year story of its Benedictine community. In the late 7th century the missionary St Willibrord founded the Benedictine abbey here, which became an important medieval religious and cultural center famous for its fine manuscripts; today the grand Baroque abbey and basilica are the heart of the town, to be visited with reverence. The Echternach Hopping Procession held every Tuesday after Pentecost — continued for centuries, with a unique sideways hopping step, singing and dancing toward the abbey — is listed as intangible cultural heritage. By the town are also an old market square, Roman villa ruins and a lake.
