Plaza Grande

Introduction

Plaza Grande — formally the Plaza de la Independencia — sits at the heart of Merida, capital of Yucatan, the soul of the White City. On its north side rises the cathedral begun in the late 16th century, among the oldest on the American mainland; the town hall, the State Government Palace and the Montejo house ring the other sides with colonial facades. Broad laurel figs shade benches of chatting locals, while vendors sell marquesote cake, woven hammocks and Yucatecan embroidery. Evenings are the plaza's finest hour — trova bands, jarana dancing and strolling families under the lights — the perfect introduction to Merida's gentle warmth.
