Introduction
The Bridge of the Americas spans the Pacific entrance of the Panama Canal. Completed in 1957 as the 'Thatcher Ferry Bridge,' it was the first fixed crossing of the Canal and thus the link between North and South America—hence its name. Once the Canal's only road bridge, its steel truss sweeps proudly outside the locks, with obelisk monuments at each end. Crossing by car or viewing from the canal shore, one feels its symbolic weight as the 'bond of two continents'; below, great ships pass where ancient and modern transport meet. Though newer bridges now share the load, it remains among Panama's most iconic engineering landmarks.
