Introduction
On the north shore of Lake Kawaguchi, the Itchiku Kubota Art Museum honours textile artist Itchiku Kubota (1917-2003). At twenty he saw a fragment of Muromachi-era tsujigahana tie-dye and devoted his life to reviving the lost technique; after war and Siberian internment he began serious research at forty and created his own 'Itchiku Tsujigahana'. The core is his life's work 'Symphony of Light' — a planned eighty kimono on the seasons and cosmos, each taking over a year of natural dyes and intricate stitch-resist. The Fuji-shaped building uses Ryukyu limestone and ancient timber; Kyoto gardener Yasuo Kitayama blended Fuji lava, limestone and spring water, and the path ends at the Grotto of the Merciful Mother.
