Introduction

Kawaguchiko Herb Hall, also called the Perfume House, is a small two-storey museum-shop on the north shore of Lake Kawaguchi at Funatsu, devoted to herbs and scent, with free entry. The ground floor stocks Yamanashi souvenirs, Mt Fuji goods, local sake and wine, including the house-made castella that has become a newer local gift; upstairs is the only specialist herb shop around the lake, selling herbal teas, cups, bath salts, dried flowers and staff-made wreaths and pressed-flower pieces. A garden behind the building holds over two hundred herb varieties, and pressed-flower workshops suit families. Almost everyone leaves with a lavender soft-serve cone, best eaten on the lake-side terrace in summer. It is not the Kawaguchiko Natural Living Center at Oishi Park, famous for lavender and blueberries, which lies much farther along the shore.
