Introduction
Kawaguchiko Field Center sits at 1,050 m in a red-pine forest on the Kenmaruo lava flow at the northern foot of Mt Fuji, covering 80,000 sq m. Over a hundred 'lava tree moulds' dot the area — hollow tree-shaped cavities left when molten lava engulfed giant trunks, a rare geological feature designated a national natural monument. Staff naturalists lead guided walks reading animal tracks, birds and plants; self-guided sheets, nature crafts, wood-fired rice cooking and day camping make it an open-air classroom for Fuji's forest ecology, especially for families.
