Introduction

The Kofu area of Yamanashi has been Japan's centre of crystal and gemstone cutting since the late Edo period, and this museum makes that chain unusually clear. Some fifty principal gemstones are displayed in sets of three, rough crystal, cut stone and finished jewel, so the same material can be compared before and after cutting and polishing: diamond, ruby, sapphire, tourmaline and cat's eye among them. At the far end of the gallery stands a 1.8-metre rock crystal, the most photographed object in the building. Photography is allowed throughout, and the attached gem shop can be browsed without an exhibition ticket. The museum sits at Funatsu on the north shore of Lake Kawaguchi, almost the same address as the herb hall, ten minutes away on the red-line loop bus, and works well on a rainy day or when Fuji is hidden by cloud.
