Introduction

Kinko Bay, also called Kagoshima Bay, is an inland sea between the Satsuma and Osumi peninsulas formed by a volcanic eruption some 30,000 years ago. Across its northern mouth sits still-smoking Sakurajima: calm water and an erupting volcano in one frame is Kagoshima's signature view. Volcanic gas still rises from the seabed, making the surface bubble as if boiling, and over 300 wild dolphins live in these nutrient-rich waters — lucky passengers spot them from the Sakurajima ferry deck. The 24-hour ferry or a 50-minute sightseeing cruise passes the Kase lighthouse, Oki-no-kojima islet and Sakurajima's lava fields, the easiest way to understand this volcano city.
