Instituto Butantan

Introduction

The Instituto Butantan lies in the Butantã district of São Paulo, Brazil, founded in 1901 as a world-renowned biomedical and toxicology institute and today a unique blend of science, conservation and exhibition. Created to produce antivenoms and vaccines, it now holds vast snake and reptile enclosures with thousands of venomous snakes and amphibians, and a 'Snake Museum' presenting Brazil's rich ophidian diversity and prevention knowledge; the grounds also include a bacteriology museum and historic buildings.
