Introduction
The Munich Residenz was the city palace and power center of the former Bavarian Wittelsbach rulers—a vast, extremely luxurious palace complex in Munich's old town, one of Germany's most important and spectacular palace museums, fully showing the centuries of splendor and taste of Bavaria's rulers. The Residenz began in the 14th century and over centuries was continuously built, expanded and remodeled by successive Bavarian dukes, electors and kings into a huge palace complex blending Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo and Neoclassical styles, with many courtyards, halls and palaces. Now a museum, its interior luxury and rich collections are breathtaking: hundreds of differently decorated, magnificent rooms and halls—from the Renaissance-style Antiquarium (a grand, long hall covered with decoration), resplendent Rococo halls, gorgeous royal apartments, to the curious Grotto Courtyard decorated with countless shells—all showing royal riches and taste; the Treasury (Schatzkammer) holds crowns, jewels, gold and silverware and other unparalleled treasures, dazzling. Besides, the Residenz has a magnificent Rococo court theater. Visiting the Munich Residenz, walking among its extremely luxurious halls and viewing the royal unparalleled treasures, is a stop to feel the former prominence and splendor of the Bavarian royal house.
