Introduction
Nymphenburg Palace is a magnificent Baroque palace in the western suburbs of Munich—the former summer residence of the Wittelsbach rulers of Bavaria, with grand palace architecture, luxurious halls and vast, beautiful gardens, one of Munich's most important royal palaces and popular sights. Built in the second half of the 17th century, originally as a summer palace for the Bavarian elector to celebrate the birth of a prince, it was expanded over generations into a large, majestic Baroque and Rococo palace complex, with a horizontally spreading main building and expansive wings. The interior is extremely luxurious and elegant—especially the resplendent Baroque banqueting hall (the Stone Hall) painted with magnificent frescoes, astounding; plus the famous 'Gallery of Beauties' (displaying many portraits of beauties commissioned by the king), and various gorgeous halls, royal apartments and treasures. Behind the palace is a vast, beautiful royal garden—formal Baroque gardens, winding canals, tranquil lakes, large shaded groves, and several delicate Rococo garden pavilions scattered in the park (such as the famous Amalienburg hunting lodge), showing the elegance and ease of a royal garden. Visiting Munich's Nymphenburg Palace, touring its luxurious halls and strolling the beautiful royal gardens, is a stop to feel the former splendor of the Bavarian royal house.
