Introduction

The Acropolis Museum stands at the southern foot of the Acropolis (15 Dionysiou Areopagitou), about 280 metres from the Parthenon. Opened in June 2009, it was designed by Bernard Tschumi with Michael Photiadis as a modern building set over a live excavation — glass floors reveal Roman and early Byzantine houses beneath your feet. Some 4,000 finds from the rock fill the galleries: the archaic kouroi and korai, the Parthenon's pediment sculptures and frieze, and five original caryatids of the Erechtheion. The top-floor Parthenon Gallery lays the frieze out at its original scale and sequence behind a glass wall facing the temple itself, while the gaps and empty mounts reserved for the Elgin Marbles make the case for reunion without a word. The second-floor restaurant and café look straight back at the Acropolis. The museum draws over a million visitors a year.

✨ Highlights

1
Parthenon Gallery
The top floor shows the frieze at original scale and sequence behind a glass wall facing the temple — a dialogue found nowhere else.
2
Original Caryatids
Five of the Erechtheion's six maiden columns stand here, the drapery and hair readable up close.
3
Excavation under glass
The museum is built over the dig; glass floors in the lower level reveal Roman and early Byzantine streets and houses.
4
Archaic gallery
Kouroi and korai face each other across the archaic hall, including the famous funerary statues.
5
Gaps for the Elgin Marbles
Empty mounts in the Parthenon Gallery await the sculptures in the British Museum — the restitution case made visible.
6
Restaurant with a view
The second-floor restaurant and ground-floor café face the Acropolis — the most comfortable mid-visit pause in Athens.

💡 Tips

• Do the Acropolis site first — standing in the glass gallery facing the Parthenon, the morning's stones all come alive.
• The top-floor gallery is backlit in the morning and best after lunch; on Fridays the museum stays open until 22:00 for evening light.
• The empty mounts for the Elgin Marbles are the silent classroom — the place to explain the restitution debate.
• Food and drink are banned inside, but the second-floor restaurant faces the Acropolis and is worth an hour's pause.
• Free days (6 March, 25 March, 18 May, 28 October and others) draw crowds — arrive early.
• The Roman and Byzantine houses under the glass floor on the ground level are the most-missed part of the visit — look down before you go up.
• The museum is ticketed separately from the Acropolis site and is not covered by any combo ticket; Friday evenings before the 22:00 close are the quietest time to come.
